The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has strengthened its partnership with the Prothese Foundation as part of ongoing efforts to advance inclusion and empowerment for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, commended the Prothese Foundation for its sustained contributions toward supporting Persons with Disabilities, particularly in facilitating their participation in the International Abilympics. He gave the commendation while hosting a delegation from the Foundation during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s National Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, the Deputy Director of the Prothese Foundation Nigeria, Mrs. Awulika Enechikwu, disclosed that the organization is proposing the full participation of a 45-member Nigerian delegation in the 11th International Abilympics (IA2027), scheduled to hold in Helsinki, Finland, from May 10 to May 13, 2027.
She noted that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
According to the Foundation, the delegation will showcase Nigeria’s vocational excellence and talents among Persons with Disabilities in various skills categories, including Digital and Technical, Creative and Beauty, as well as Service and Construction. The Foundation emphasized its readiness to support the Commission’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a global leader in disability inclusion through strategic planning and responsible financial management.
Mrs. Enechikwu further explained that the Foundation has developed a structured plan to leverage International Abilympic Federation (IAF) Aid scholarships and implement cost-saving measures, particularly in the areas of international travel and accommodation. She added that selected participants will include skilled Persons with Disabilities drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and state governments, while previous Abilympics contestants will be granted automatic registration.
Both the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and the Prothese Foundation reaffirmed their commitment to promoting disability inclusion and vocational empowerment in Nigeria, while calling on stakeholders to support initiatives that create an enabling environment for Persons with Disabilities to thrive.
