The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Gufwan, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
Chief Gufwan gave the assurance on Monday, July 7, 2025, while receiving a delegation from Project Enable Africa, an organisation dedicated to disability advocacy through data-driven research and community engagement. He commended the group for its sustained efforts in promoting inclusive development and amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities.
“My greatest desire is to see Nigeria become the most disability-friendly country in the world,” Chief Gufwan stated. “With over 35 million persons with disabilities, inclusion is no longer optional—it is a necessity. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind.”
He acknowledged the financial limitations faced by government institutions and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts. According to him, the private sector, development partners, and donor communities have a vital role to play in bridging gaps and driving sustainable impact.
During the meeting, Project Enable Africa, led by Project Director Mr. Michael Ojediran, presented findings from a nationwide research conducted in 2024. The research assessed how well the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act is being implemented across Nigeria’s states and the FCT. Mr. Ojediran explained that the report was designed to track progress, promote transparency, and encourage greater commitment from state governments.
He also introduced a new ranking framework developed to recognize states making significant strides in disability inclusion, with the aim of encouraging others to improve.
Chief Gufwan welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with the Commission’s strategic goals. He assured the team of NCPWD’s readiness to adopt the findings as tools for stronger advocacy and policy dialogue, especially at the state level.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties pledging to deepen collaboration and explore new ways of promoting full inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
