The Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPWD) on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, marked the first anniversary of its establishment with the unveiling of key disability-inclusive policies developed with technical support from the World Bank.
The anniversary ceremony, held at the Education Resource Centre in Gombe, attracted top government officials, civil society organisations, development partners, leaders of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and persons with disabilities from across the state.
The event featured commendations for the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to disability inclusion, which led to the establishment of the Commission.
INN reports that that the governor’s support has ensured that GSCPWD remains functional, impactful, and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities, setting a strong example of inclusive governance in Nigeria.
Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Chairman of GSCPWD, Ishiyaku Adamu, highlighted the significant achievements recorded within the Commission’s first year. He disclosed that GSCPWD has implemented various livelihood and empowerment programmes that have trained and economically supported many persons with disabilities, enhancing self-reliance and productivity. According to him, the Commission has also distributed modern assistive devices, particularly to students with disabilities, to improve access to education and learning outcomes.
Adamu further revealed that the Commission has built strong partnerships with development partners, including the World Bank and Qatar Charity, to mobilise technical and financial support for inclusive programmes. He added that, with the backing of the state government, GSCPWD has facilitated employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, including placements at the federal level, to promote dignity, independence, and economic inclusion.
In separate remarks, the Chairman of Gombe Local Government and ALGON Chairman in the state, Barr. Sani A. A. Haruna, alongside the Gombe State Project Coordinator of AGILE, Dr. Amina A. Haruna, commended Governor Yahaya for establishing the Commission and pledged continued support for its activities.
In a show of commitment to disability inclusion, Barr. Haruna donated ₦1 million to orphans with disabilities and reaffirmed his resolve to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities in local government administration across the state.
The event also witnessed a touching moment when students with disabilities presented an award to Governor Yahaya in appreciation of his decision to increase disability scholarships and sustain free education for persons with disabilities at all levels, as provided under the Gombe State Disability Law.
