by Inclusive News Network

The Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPWD) has participated in a high-level consultative meeting with the leadership of the World Bank and Task Team Leaders overseeing various Bank-supported projects in Nigeria, aimed at advancing disability inclusion in national development efforts.

The meeting, held on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the World Bank Country Office in Abuja, provided an avenue for stakeholders to assess how ongoing World Bank operations are integrating persons with disabilities (PWDs) into development programmes. Discussions also focused on strategies to enhance inclusivity in future projects, ensuring that PWDs are not excluded from Nigeria’s growth agenda.

Representing the Commission and speaking on behalf of the North East region, the Executive Chairman of GSCPWD, Dr Adamu Ishaq, commended the World Bank for its continued support to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and state disability commissions, including GSCPWD. While acknowledging the mainstreaming of disability inclusion in existing projects, he appealed for stronger, disability-specific interventions similar to targeted programmes designed for women’s empowerment.

In response, the World Bank team reaffirmed its commitment to disability inclusion, stressing that the institution maintains strong policies to guide inclusive development. The Bank also encouraged disability leaders to remain actively engaged to ensure the needs and rights of persons with disabilities are adequately reflected in project design and implementation.

The consultative engagement marks a significant step towards deepening collaboration between GSCPWD and the World Bank, reinforcing efforts to promote equal opportunities and a more inclusive future for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
