The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has provided free medical services to over 150 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) during a medical outreach held on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in Karonmajiji, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The outreach catered to adults and children with various health-threatening conditions, as part of the Commission’s efforts to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable groups.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan Burki, who was represented by the Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Edelifo Idemudia, said the outreach was designed to support PWDs by addressing some of their pressing medical needs. He emphasized that good health is critical to productivity and overall well-being, noting that the Commission remains deeply concerned about the health conditions of persons with disabilities.
Hon. Burki disclosed that the outreach was a pilot programme, adding that the Commission is preparing to roll out a broader and more inclusive medical intervention that would reach a larger number of beneficiaries across the country. He urged participants to cooperate fully with the medical team to ensure the success of the pilot exercise and maximize its benefits.
He also expressed appreciation to the community leadership for the warm reception accorded to the NCPWD team.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Guragu of the FCT, Alhaji Muhammed Suleiman Katsina, speaking on behalf of persons with disabilities in Abuja, commended the Commission for initiating what he described as a laudable and impactful programme. He said the outreach further demonstrated NCPWD’s strong commitment to the welfare and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Similarly, the Chief of the Blind in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Alhaji Bala Jibrin, expressed gratitude to the Commission and offered prayers for its continued success. He noted that proactive concern for people’s health, even before illness occurs, reflects genuine care and compassion for vulnerable members of society.
The medical outreach was conducted under the supervision of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure the safety of beneficiaries and maintain order throughout the exercise.
