The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has joined the global community to mark World Spinal Cord Injury Day, emphasizing awareness, prevention, and improved support for individuals living with spinal cord injuries.
This year’s theme, “Turning Challenges into Strength”, underscores the resilience of millions of people who live with spinal cord injuries while striving to lead dignified and fulfilling lives.
Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, described the day as a vital moment to advocate for inclusion and strengthen commitments toward eliminating barriers.
“Spinal cord injuries change lives in an instant, but they do not erase dreams, dignity, or potential. Behind every statistic is a human story—a son, a daughter, a parent—who deserves every opportunity to live and thrive,” he stated.
Gufwan urged government agencies, private organizations, healthcare professionals, and civil society to collaborate in expanding access to rehabilitation, mobility aids, emergency care, and employment opportunities for affected individuals.
According to the Commission, spinal cord injuries, often caused by road accidents, falls, or violence, affect thousands of Nigerians annually. However, timely intervention and inclusive policies can help those affected live productive and independent lives.
The NCPWD reiterated that spinal cord injury care is a human rights and inclusion issue, calling for nationwide efforts to ensure dignity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all.
