The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, has lauded the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for organising a sensitisation workshop focused on promoting digital citizenship among persons with disabilities.
Represented by the Director of Social Integration at the Commission, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, Gufwan described the initiative as a progressive and timely step toward bridging the digital divide and fostering the full participation of persons with disabilities in the digital space.
He noted that the NCC’s efforts align with both national and global commitments to inclusivity, accessibility, and sustainable development.
“As we gather here today, we are reminded of the transformative potential of information and communication technologies in promoting equality, inclusion, and independent living for persons with disabilities. When made accessible, the digital environment can remove barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and civic engagement,” he stated.
The workshop, held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the Bolingo Xperia Hotel, Abuja, and themed “Empowering All – Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities,” brought together stakeholders from across sectors to engage in dialogue, share expertise, and collaborate on advancing digital inclusion.
The NCPWD Executive Secretary called on all participants — including policymakers, ICT professionals, civil society representatives, and members of the disability community — to take full advantage of the platform to develop inclusive, forward-thinking digital solutions that truly leave no one behind.
He reaffirmed NCPWD’s commitment to continued collaboration with the NCC and other partners to ensure that Nigeria’s digital transformation is inclusive, participatory, and empowering, particularly for persons with disabilities.
Participants at the workshop acknowledged that digital citizenship plays a vital role in improving access to information, enhancing communication, transforming lives through empowerment, expanding digital education, and creating inclusive employment opportunities in the evolving tech landscape.
The event also featured discussions on key issues such as online safety, privacy, and ethical behaviour in digital spaces. One of the major presentations, delivered by Barr. Ikem Onuegbunam, focused on bridging the digital divide and eliminating the stigma associated with disability in the digital world.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of braille books by the Nigerian Communications Commission to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. The materials, presented by Mrs. Olatokunbo Oleyele, were received by Mr. Lawrence Idemudia on behalf of the Commission. Certificates of participation were also distributed to all attendees, marking the successful close of a meaningful and impactful workshop.
