Disability Agency, Health Ministry Partner to Improve Healthcare Access for Persons with Disabilities

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has reaffirmed its readiness to strengthen collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Health to enhance healthcare delivery and promote disability inclusion across the state.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Ministry at Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the need to integrate disability-inclusive practices within the state’s healthcare system.

Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal, who led a delegation of top LASODA officials and representatives from the Down Syndrome Foundation, Festus Fajemilo Foundation, and Albinism Association of Lagos State, highlighted the importance of continuous training for healthcare workers to promote empathy, accessibility, and inclusion for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

She also called for the physical accessibility of health facilities and more responsive healthcare services tailored to the needs of PWDs.

In his remarks, a disability advocate, Mr. Afolabi Fajemilo, expressed the community’s willingness to collaborate with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on specialized initiatives, including health training, financing models, and service improvement for PWDs.

Responding on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tolu Ajomale, Head of Special Projects and Mental Health, commended LASODA for its proactive engagement and reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to inclusive healthcare.

Ajomale noted that Lagos State has implemented various measures to expand access to healthcare and governance for PWDs, adding that sustained collaboration among stakeholders remains essential to achieving an inclusive health system.
