The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has engaged the Lagos State Ministry of Housing on the need to strengthen accessibility standards and promote inclusive housing development across the state.
During a courtesy visit to the Ministry on February 2, 2026, the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdul Afeez Toriola, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive housing policies and compliance with established accessibility standards.
He disclosed that provisions have already been made for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the design and development of government housing estates, adding that the Ministry remains open to further improvements to enhance inclusivity.
Engr. Toriola noted that the engagement aligns with the government’s broader vision of building a society where all residents, regardless of physical ability, can live with dignity and independence. He assured that the Ministry would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that accessibility features are integrated into housing projects and public infrastructure.
The visit formed part of LASODA’s ongoing advocacy initiative titled “Advocacy on Accessibility Compliance by Public Facilities in Lagos State,” aimed at promoting inclusive infrastructure and ensuring compliance with accessibility standards in public buildings.
Speaking at the meeting, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the importance of mainstreaming inclusion in the planning, design, and execution of housing and public infrastructure projects. She stressed that accessibility is not optional but a fundamental requirement for the full participation of persons with disabilities in society.
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal highlighted key accessibility features, including designated parking spaces, ramps, signage, elevators, and accessible walkways, noting that these elements must be deliberately incorporated into both new and existing structures.
She also requested that LASODA be invited to the Ministry’s stakeholders’ meetings to provide technical guidance and raise awareness on disability-inclusive practices.
