Kano – A leading disability advocate and concerned citizen, Engr. Abdul Haruna, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 22 young athletes from Kano State who died in a fatal road traffic accident while returning from the National Athletics Competition in Ogun State. In an open condolence letter addressed to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, Haruna conveyed his grief on behalf of himself and the wider community of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
Describing the incident as “heart-wrenching,” Haruna lamented the premature loss of lives filled with promise and commitment to sports development in Kano. “These young lives, full of dreams and dedication to service, were cut short in the most tragic way,” he wrote, noting their pride in representing the state on a national platform.
The accident, which also left nine other athletes injured, has sent shockwaves across Kano State and the national sporting community. Haruna extended condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. He called on Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus and to give strength to those left behind.
As someone living with a spinal cord injury resulting from a road accident, Haruna empathized personally with the pain of the injured and their families. He urged Governor Yusuf to implement lasting safety measures to protect young talents who dedicate their lives to bringing glory to the state.
Commending the governor’s immediate response to the tragedy, Haruna appealed for continued efforts to improve the welfare and support systems for athletes and vulnerable groups in the state.
“This tragedy reminds us all of the need for greater compassion, stronger support systems, and improved safety for all citizens,” he added.
The state is currently observing a period of mourning as tributes continue to pour in for the fallen athletes.
