Cedar Seed Foundation has demanded every buildings at worship centres like Churches and Mosques be accessible to persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
The demand was made while holding a peaceful walk to create awareness on disability inclusion in places of worship.
INN reports that the event was organised to mark the 3rd edition of International Disability Dialogue in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 2023.
Speaking to newsmen, Miss Janet Alabede, Gender Inclusion Officer of Cedar Seed Foundation (CSF) highlighted the importance of disability inclusion in Churches and Mosques.
She said “Persons with Disabilities have the right to worship but most times they find it difficult to access most places of worship.
“Most of the buildings in Nigeria are not accessible for persons on wheelchairs. If you go to most of these tall buildings, there is no lift or ramps.
“If you go to hospital, there is no Sign Language interpreting services available for the Deaf. If you go to market or church, they are not accessible.
“Even in employment PWDs are excluded so we are using this opportunity to create awareness on the need and importance of inclusion of persons with disabilities in Mosques.”
“PWDs are human beings. It’s a human right for every building to be accessible to PWDs.” Alabede said.
Mustapha Abdurrahman, event partner of CSF, admitted that the reason why the foundation choose strategic location like the National Mosque to advocate for Disability inclusion is because this is where people gather from all parts of Nigeria.
According to him, “We choose here to make a statement that PWDs are human being too and deserve equal rights.”
