The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening the digital competencies of journalists with disabilities in northern Nigeria.
The training, held from Saturday 15th to Sunday 16th November 2025 at the PWDs Digital Training Hub in Kano, focused on digital journalism, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Canva design, digital rights, and data privacy.
In a statement signed by Hamza Aminu Fagge, PWD Coordinator, the Centre said the event forms part of CITAD’s broader drive toward digital inclusion and empowering underrepresented groups in the media space.
Declaring the workshop open, CITAD’s Executive Director, Engr. Yunusa Zakari Ya’u—represented by Communications Officer, Ali Sabo—said the initiative seeks to equip journalists with disabilities with modern tools to enhance inclusive storytelling. “This training represents our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital revolution. Journalists with disabilities deserve access to the same tools and knowledge as others, and we are here to support that,” he said.
Participants engaged in hands-on sessions on AI-assisted content creation, accessible visual storytelling using Canva, and key lessons on protecting personal and professional data online. Facilitator Mubarak Shehu Dayyab highlighted the importance of accessible AI tools for research, transcription, and content design, noting that such tools significantly enhance the work of journalists with visual or physical impairments.
A visually impaired journalist from Premiere Radio, Ukasha Lawan Diza, expressed gratitude to CITAD for the opportunity, stating that the knowledge gained would increase his productivity and confidence in the newsroom. Similarly, Dr. Bala Muhammad of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University Kano, commended CITAD for fostering digital inclusion and urged participants to apply their new skills in their professional practice.
With this initiative, CITAD continues to strengthen inclusive ICT development across Nigeria, demonstrating its commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are equipped to contribute meaningfully to media and society.
