The Centre for Infrastructural and Technological Advancement for the Blind (CITAB) has raised concerns over disability inclusion in Lagos, criticizing recent actions by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and questioning the credibility of recruitment claims involving persons with disabilities.
In a press release issued on March 19, 2026, the Executive Chairman of CITAB, Jolomi Fenemigho, described LASODA’s recent assistive device distribution as a publicity-focused intervention that fails to address deeper structural challenges such as discrimination, inaccessible infrastructure, and unemployment among persons with disabilities.
CITAB also raised alarm over the outcome of a recent recruitment exercise conducted by the Lagos State Local Government Council, noting that despite claims of employing persons with disabilities, no visually impaired candidate has confirmed receiving an appointment. The group called for transparency and urged LASODA to publish verifiable evidence of such employments.
The organization further called for a comprehensive audit of disability representation across government agencies and demanded concrete steps toward enforcing the five percent employment quota under the Lagos State Special People’s Law.
It also emphasized the need for inclusive policies, improved accessibility, and the active involvement of disability-led groups in monitoring programmes, stressing that meaningful inclusion must go beyond symbolic gestures.
