The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has engaged members of the dwarf communities in Kano to explore solutions to the social, cultural, and economic challenges they face, as part of efforts to promote inclusion and strengthen civic and democratic participation.
Speaking at the meeting, CITAD’s Executive Director, Malam Y.Z. Ya’u, stressed that dwarfism in Nigeria is more than a physical condition, noting that individuals with dwarfism often endure severe social barriers.
“Beyond their stature, people with dwarfism in Nigeria live with discrimination, lack of opportunities, and emotional insecurities,” he said. “Superstitions and misconceptions about dwarfism remain widespread, sometimes leading to dehumanization and stigmatization.”
Ya’u affirmed that CITAD, a non-governmental organisation advocating good governance, accountability, and anti-corruption through ICT, is committed to challenging harmful stereotypes and creating equal opportunities for all persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Hamza Aminu Fagge, CITAD’s PWDs Coordinator, explained that the organisation focuses on empowering PWD clusters through ICT, digital skills, and social media marketing. “Our fully equipped Digital Hubs are designed for PWD communities to help them compete equally in the digital space and all spheres of life,” he said, adding that there is currently no standard organisation for people with dwarfism in Nigeria based on his findings.
One participant, Naja’atu Yusuf, shared her personal experiences with stigma, noting that prejudice often begins from first impressions.
“From the moment some people meet us, negative thoughts enter their minds,” she said. “They stare, make rude jokes or comments, and sometimes outrightly discriminate against us.”
Naja’atu added that many dwarfs struggle to access education, healthcare, and other essential services, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She emphasised that myths and ignorance about physical differences fuel much of the discrimination.
She appealed to Nigerians to stop excluding dwarfs in employment, marriage, and other areas of life, urging for a society that values diversity and inclusion.
