The Centre for Disability Rights, Empowerment and Development (CDRED) has described the passage of the Bayelsa State Disability Law as a major milestone for persons with disabilities in the state, noting that the development demonstrates the government’s commitment to social justice and inclusive development.
In a statement issued in Yenagoa, the organisation emphasized that while the passage of the law represents a significant achievement, attention must now shift to securing assent, ensuring effective implementation, and delivering measurable impact for persons with disabilities.
The Centre noted that the success of the law will depend on proper coordination, early planning, and sustained cooperation among government agencies, institutions, and stakeholders within the disability community. The organisation described the achievement as a collective effort that requires continued collaboration to translate legislative progress into meaningful improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.
The group commended the leadership of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and the State Governor, Douye Diri, for what it described as compassionate and humanitarian leadership that has contributed to advancing disability rights and inclusive development in the state.
CDRED also called on stakeholders to act with wisdom and restraint, urging unity and partnership rather than division at this critical stage of the process. The organisation stressed that collective action is essential to ensure that the new law delivers lasting benefits for persons with disabilities across the state.
Highlighting its role in the legislative journey, CDRED stated that it closely monitored and constructively engaged in the process from advocacy to passage, noting that its representatives were present in the chambers of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on the day the bill was approved.
The organisation further expressed readiness to collaborate with the state government to support effective implementation of the law, citing its expertise in disability rights, stakeholder engagement, and policy advocacy as vital contributions toward achieving sustainable impact.
CDRED expressed confidence that with timely assent and coordinated implementation, the Bayelsa State Disability Law will significantly improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities and strengthen the state’s record in inclusive governance.
