The Centre for Infrastructural and Technological Advancement for the Blind (CITAB) has commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for introducing an electric campus transportation scheme, which is set to roll out in November 2025 across 12 pilot tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Lagos and signed by its Executive Chairman, Jolomi George Fenemigho, the organisation described the initiative as a “significant step forward” in improving student welfare, promoting sustainability, and enhancing campus infrastructure.
“The introduction of a sustainable, affordable electric shuttle system marks a major advancement in campus life and aligns perfectly with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to educational innovation,” Fenemigho said. He lauded TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, for his “visionary leadership” in addressing mobility challenges faced by students, particularly those living off-campus.
While welcoming the move, CITAB urged TETFund and the management of the participating institutions to ensure that the new shuttle system is fully accessible to blind and visually impaired students. The organisation noted that true inclusion requires the removal of all barriers that prevent independent mobility for students with disabilities.
CITAB outlined specific measures for inclusion, including the installation of audible navigation systems on electric shuttles to announce stops, tactile and Braille signage at charging and boarding points, screen reader–compatible apps for booking rides, and mandatory staff training on disability sensitivity and guidance techniques.
“As we celebrate this landmark initiative, we caution against overlooking any section of the student body,” Fenemigho warned. “A truly accessible shuttle system benefits everyone—students with disabilities, those with temporary injuries, the elderly, and new students alike. Inclusion is the hallmark of sustainable progress.”
CITAB further expressed its readiness to collaborate with TETFund by offering technical support to ensure that the pilot institutions set a new benchmark for accessible and inclusive campus transportation nationwide.
