The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has urged stakeholders to unite in breaking the barriers that continue to exclude millions of Nigerians with disabilities from active participation in society.
Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, made the call at the 65th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Enugu.
Gufwan described inclusion as a human right, not charity, noting that over 35.5 million Nigerians with disabilities face systemic obstacles in education, healthcare, employment, and access to justice.
He emphasized the urgent need to enforce the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, especially Sections 1, 3, and 29, which guarantee equal opportunities and access to public facilities for persons with disabilities.
“Disability is not inability. Persons with disabilities have unique skills and perspectives that can strengthen our society and economy. We must work together to promote accessibility, challenge stereotypes, and enact inclusive policies,” Gufwan stated.
The NCPWD reiterated its commitment to collaborate with government, civil society, and the private sector to promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
