Brazil, India, and Peru are among 13 countries set to compete in the 2025 First Abia Para Badminton International Championships, scheduled to hold in Abia State, Nigeria, from September 30 to October 5.
The historic tournament — the first Para Badminton International to be hosted in the South-East region of Nigeria — will take place at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, marking a significant milestone for the sport in both the state and the West African subregion.
Confirming preparations for the event, Ekeoma Samuel, National Coordinator for Para Badminton at the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) and Secretary of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), commended the Abia State Government for its commitment to delivering a world-class competition.
“Abia State, as the host, is doing everything possible to make this tournament a remarkable one,” Samuel assured.
Nigeria will field the largest contingent with 48 athletes, closely followed by India with 37 players. Other participating nations include Benin Republic (10), Brazil (8), Egypt (10), Peru (6), Cameroon (4), Democratic Republic of Congo (5), Mauritius (2), Tunisia (2), Zambia (2), Rwanda (1), and Burkina Faso (1) — bringing together players from across Africa, Asia, and South America.
Samuel also urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to prioritise support for Team Nigeria to ensure a strong showing.
The tournament will conclude on October 5, setting the stage for the 2025 Africa Para Badminton Championships — another six-day event featuring athletes from 10 African countries, promising two weeks of exciting para-sport action in Abia State.
