Blind Association Accuses Senator Jimkuta of Marginalizing PWDs in Taraba South

by Inclusive News Network

The Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba State Chapter, has accused the Senator representing Taraba South, David Su Jimkuta, of sidelining persons with disabilities (PWDs) in his constituency programmes and projects.

In an open letter signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Wanderimam Teyang, the group expressed dismay over what it described as “a high rate of discrimination and marginalization” against PWDs since the lawmaker assumed office.

While acknowledging Senator Jimkuta’s efforts in empowering various groups through employment opportunities, distribution of vehicles and motorcycles, as well as provision of fertilizers, the association lamented that none of such interventions had been extended to persons with disabilities.

“Our members feel left out and neglected,” the letter read. “This omission is a clear manifestation of discrimination and marginalization, which we find disheartening.”

The association noted that several attempts were made to draw the senator’s attention through letters, text messages and phone calls, but without response.

It further reminded the lawmaker that PWDs also voted for him during the 2023 senatorial election and deserve equal attention in his constituency outreach.

To address the concerns, the association demanded the creation of empowerment programmes tailored for PWDs, scholarships to further their education, accessible employment opportunities, and projects designed to improve their quality of life.

It also urged Senator Jimkuta to ensure that all his initiatives are disability-inclusive by consulting organizations of persons with disabilities, providing accessible infrastructure, and making communication channels inclusive.

“We believe that as a good senator who has supported other groups, you will hear our cry and respond to our requests,” the group concluded.
