Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has approved a 50 percent reduction in transport fares for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) traveling on all routes operated by the state-owned Benue Links Nigeria Ltd.
The General Manager of the company, Comrade Alexander Fanafa, announced the directive in Makurdi over the weekend, noting that it took immediate effect.
The move comes just weeks after Governor Alia signed the domesticated version of the Disability Act into law in Benue State, signaling his administration’s commitment to inclusion and accessibility.
According to Fanafa, the governor has consistently demonstrated responsiveness to the transportation needs of Benue residents and Nigerians who rely on the services of Benue Links. He recalled that the Alia administration had earlier addressed perennial flooding at the company’s headquarters by constructing a culvert, drainage, and upgrading the premises with asphalt.
He further highlighted the governor’s intervention in November 2023, when he donated 100 buses to the company to revive its operations. Since then, the company has expanded its fleet with 10 additional buses and 10 sedan cars for taxi services.
“The governor also directed that all PWDs traveling with Benue Links should enjoy a 50 percent discount on fares and be given preferential treatment. This is to ensure inclusivity and a sense of belonging in the state’s transportation system,” the GM stated.
Fanafa disclosed that the company’s affordable fares and expanded fleet have compelled independent transporters in the state to review their charges downward, making transportation more accessible to the public.
To strengthen operations, Benue Links has recruited over 110 new drivers under the supervision of VIO and FRSC officials. Staff welfare has also improved, with workers now earning a minimum wage of ₦75,000 and retirees receiving their gratuities promptly.
The GM praised Governor Alia for transforming the transport sector, noting that Benue Links now covers 35 states including Abuja, with plans to reopen its Ekiti route soon. He added that the company has also introduced online booking on selected routes, as well as haulage and courier services following the acquisition of new trucks.
Fanafa further revealed that the company’s intracity transport services have cushioned the impact of fuel subsidy removal on civil servants in Makurdi, stressing that the governor remains committed to ensuring affordable and efficient movement of people, goods, and services across the state.
