The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed the Bauchi State Disability Protection Bill through its first and second readings during plenary on Tuesday, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman.
The bill, sponsored by Hon. Barr. Habibu Umar, seeks to establish the Bauchi State Disability Commission and repeal the 2010 law establishing the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities. Umar explained that the existing legislation was inadequate to meet the demands of a modern society and called for stronger, more inclusive laws to safeguard the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
The motion for the first reading was seconded by Hon. Garba Lawal and subsequently approved by the Speaker, who directed Deputy Clerk Musa Yarima to read the bill. The first reading was successfully taken.
Umar later led the debate on the bill after receiving the House’s approval, with Hon. Dayyabu Ladan Mohammed and Hon. Ahmed Abdullahi backing the motion. Both lawmakers commended the initiative, highlighting its potential to improve the living conditions and opportunities for persons with disabilities in Bauchi State.
Following the debate, the bill scaled its second reading after being seconded by Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Itas. The Speaker referred it to the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs for further review and recommendations after the House’s recess.
