The Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, has pledged to establish a Disability Desk to enhance support, access, and inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the council area.
He made the commitment during the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration, held at the Olorunda LCDA Secretariat, Iworo, in partnership with the Association of Persons with Disabilities (APWD), Badagry Chapter.
During the event, Hon. Kumayon assured the disability community that his administration would respond to their needs, provide assistive materials, and create responsive governance structures. He pledged ₦815,000 to assist a PWD requiring surgery, approved sponsorship for a visually impaired student admitted to Obafemi Awolowo University, and committed to providing a knee brace to support another PWD’s mobility.
Mautin Towolabani, Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, representing Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, expressed the council’s support for PWDs and confirmed that a Disability Desk would soon be created to monitor and support the activities of the association.
Monday Tanimowo, representing Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, urged persons with disabilities to demonstrate confidence, showcase their talents, and actively participate in society to prove their value.
Earlier, the APWD Badagry Chairman, Comrade Sejoro Ekundayo Peter, highlighted daily challenges faced by PWDs, including inaccessible public buildings, lack of sign language interpreters, limited health support, and high unemployment. In his speech, he called on all councils in Badagry to establish Disability Desks, appoint Senior Special Assistants on Disability Matters, enforce the 5% employment quota, and set up special schools to ease access to education for children with disabilities. He commended the Badagry Local Government Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, for already taking steps in this direction.
Guest speakers reinforced the importance of inclusion. Dr. Olalekan Mohammed of Lagos State University, Ojo, encouraged political participation among PWDs to secure representation. Funmilola Ogunro, Founder of Friends of the Deaf International Foundation, stressed that inclusive education is key to social progress and urged barrier-free learning environments, trained teachers, and assistive technology.
The event drew stakeholders from across Badagry Division, including government representatives, disability advocates, and community leaders, all reaffirming their commitment to supporting PWD-focused programmes and creating dedicated Disability Desks to ensure inclusivity.
