The Bayelsa State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD) has cautioned the Bayelsa State House of Assembly against engaging with individuals it described as impostors, amid ongoing progress on the state’s Disability Rights Bill.
In an open letter addressed to the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, and members of the Assembly, the association alleged that some suspended individuals were falsely parading themselves as representatives of the disability community in Bayelsa State. It urged lawmakers to disregard any communication or claims made by such persons.
JONAPWD stated that its legitimate leadership, led by Chairman Mayor Ekpomokumor, remains the recognised voice of persons with disabilities in the state. The group added that its delegation recently visited the Assembly and was informed that the Disability Rights Bill had advanced through several legislative stages and was close to passage.
The association also highlighted achievements under the current leadership, including securing over 40 political appointments for persons with disabilities and promoting inclusive programmes. It expressed optimism that with the Assembly’s cooperation, the Disability Rights Bill would soon be enacted to strengthen the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Bayelsa State.
