The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), Ogun State Chapter, has officially launched its Basic Sign Language Class for beginners as part of efforts to promote communication access and inclusion for Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons across the state.
The initiative is designed to foster better understanding, reduce discrimination, and promote equal access to education, employment, and active community participation for persons with hearing impairments. It also seeks to strengthen social unity by encouraging empathy, mutual respect, and meaningful interaction between Deaf and hearing individuals.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola, described sign language as a vital tool for bridging communication gaps and strengthening relationships with the Deaf community. He stressed that inclusive communication promotes social harmony and ensures that no member of society is marginalised.
The monarch reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that advance inclusion, human development, and improved living standards for all residents of the kingdom and the state at large.
In her welcome address, the Wife of the Olowu, Olori Ameenat Matemilola, commended ASLIN for the initiative and encouraged participants to fully embrace the learning process. She called on Nigerians to work towards building a society where every voice, whether spoken or expressed through signs, is recognised and valued.
Also speaking, the Chairman of ASLIN, Ogun State Chapter, Mr. Oluwaseyi Ogunbayo, urged the state government, relevant ministries, and institutions to ensure the provision of sign language interpretation at public events, official announcements, and government programmes.
He further appealed to the Ministry of Education to integrate sign language studies into the school curriculum from Basic 5 through secondary level, allowing Deaf and hearing students to learn together and fostering an inclusive future generation.
The programme concluded with an interactive introductory session, during which dignitaries and participants were taught the fundamentals of sign language, including the alphabet, numbers, greetings, and family-related signs, officially marking the commencement of the training programme.
