The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has called for collective action to end discrimination against children with Down Syndrome as Nigeria joined the global community to mark World Down Syndrome Day.
In a statement issued on March 21, 2026, and signed by its National President, Abdullahi Aliyu Usman, the association expressed solidarity with persons with Down syndrome, their families, and advocates across Nigeria and beyond.
Usman emphasized that the day serves not only as a moment of celebration but also as a call to action for stakeholders to challenge stereotypes, dismantle discrimination, and address systemic barriers that limit the full participation of persons with Down syndrome in society.
He noted that despite progress in disability inclusion, many individuals with Down syndrome continue to face exclusion in key areas such as education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. He stressed that their rights are often overlooked, their voices unheard, and their potential underestimated, adding that inclusion should be recognized as a fundamental human right rather than an act of charity.
JONAPWD therefore called on government authorities to strengthen and fully implement inclusive policies that protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. The association also urged educational institutions to create accessible and inclusive learning environments where children with Down syndrome can learn, grow, and thrive alongside their peers.
The organization further appealed to communities and families to reject stigma and embrace acceptance, understanding, and support, while encouraging young people and advocates to use their voices to promote awareness and drive meaningful social change.
Reaffirming its commitment, JONAPWD stated that persons with Down syndrome are not defined by limitations but by their abilities, talents, and aspirations. The association emphasized that when given equal opportunities, they contribute meaningfully to society and enrich their communities in numerous ways.
The statement concluded with a renewed pledge by JONAPWD to continue amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities and advancing a future where no one is left behind, urging Nigerians to move beyond awareness toward concrete actions that promote equity, dignity, and inclusion for all.
