The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has restated its determination to promote dignity, inclusion, and sustainable empowerment for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.
This assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Society for People with Disabilities Forum to LASODA’s office, where discussions centered on collaborative approaches to addressing the persistent issue of street begging among PWDs.
Representing the General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Sefiu Babatunde, commended the Forum for its proactive efforts in seeking practical and sustainable solutions to the social and welfare challenges affecting the disability community.
Babatunde reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to implementing inclusive policies that promote rehabilitation, education, and self-reliance among PWDs. He urged the group to identify areas of vocational interest and skill development that could enhance empowerment and foster social integration.
He also advised parents of children with disabilities to take advantage of the state’s free basic education policy by enrolling their wards in public schools. In addition, he encouraged members to register with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) to be included in government records and access welfare interventions designed for PWDs.
Babatunde further disclosed that the government had established a resettlement hub for street beggars at Oko Oba, Agege, where individuals are rehabilitated and supported toward achieving sustainable livelihoods.
