The Beyond Limit Initiative for Women and Girls with Disabilities has called for urgent policy reforms and stronger institutional commitment to ensure the full inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in all aspects of society.
The group made the call in a statement released in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration themed “Count Us In: Breaking Barriers. Beyond Limit.”
According to the organisation, women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple layers of discrimination driven by gender inequality and disability-related stigma. These barriers, it said, significantly restrict their access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare services, and justice.
The organisation emphasized that inclusive development cannot be achieved unless governments and institutions take deliberate steps to dismantle systemic barriers and create structures that uphold the dignity, safety, and economic independence of women with disabilities.
The initiative identified several priority areas requiring immediate attention, including economic empowerment, stronger protection against gender-based violence, inclusive governance, and improved access to reproductive health services.
Speaking during the commemoration, the Executive Director, Oluwatomisin Adeyefa Olatayo, stated that meaningful inclusion goes beyond rhetoric and requires tangible policy reforms as well as a shift in societal attitudes toward disability.
She noted that International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that societies must create enabling environments where women with disabilities can thrive, participate in decision-making processes, and contribute fully to national development.
The organisation also called on government agencies, civil society organisations, and development partners to move beyond ceremonial celebrations and demonstrate genuine commitment by implementing practical measures that promote the rights and inclusion of women and girls with disabilities.
