The Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC), a coalition of five Civil Society Organizations, has commended Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for signing the Gombe State Disability Protection Law into effect and establishing the Disability Commission. This milestone, achieved on December 23, 2024, marks a significant step toward inclusive governance in the state.
In a statement signed by Grace Jerry, ADAC Anchor and Executive Director of Inclusive Friends Association, the group praised Yahaya’s swift action and dedication to empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs). Jerry noted that the governor demonstrated an exceptional governance style by establishing the Disability Commission on the same day the law was signed, setting a high standard for other states.
“This is a remarkable achievement for Gombe State, home to over half a million PWDs,” the statement read. “The new law will transform critical sectors, including education, health, transport, infrastructure, and political participation, while creating accessible systems and holding the government accountable.”
ADAC also extended congratulations to Dr. Ishiyaku Adamu on his appointment as Executive Secretary of the Disability Commission. The group applauded his leadership and the unwavering support from key stakeholders, including the Joint Association of Persons with Disabilities (Gombe Chapter), civil society groups, and media organizations in the state.
The group also lauded the Gombe State House of Assembly for their legislative efforts, particularly Speaker Rt. Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo and Hon. Shuaibu Adamu, who sponsored the bill. Jerry acknowledged their commitment during pivotal meetings in Yola and Bauchi, which prioritized the disability bill and led to its passage.
ADAC urged disability clusters to collaborate for collective progress and called on the media to sustain their advocacy efforts. The statement also encouraged the Assembly to prioritize inclusive budgeting to ensure the Disability Commission functions effectively.
“This journey toward an inclusive Gombe State is a triumph of visionary leadership and collaboration. ADAC is honored to be part of this historic achievement and remains committed to supporting the Disability Commission in its mission to implement the law’s provisions,” Jerry concluded.
