From childhood, Solomon “Lionheart” Okelola nurtured a passion for martial arts. Together with his younger brother, he spent countless hours watching action movies featuring legendary martial artists such as Jackie Chan, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, and Bruce Lee. Because of his low vision, Solomon often sat very close to the television screen to follow the action, while his younger brother helped by repeating dialogue so he could better understand what was happening. Whenever they were not playing football or reading, the two brothers could always be found immersed in martial arts films.
That early fascination eventually shaped his future. During his undergraduate years at the University of Ibadan, Solomon joined the Taekwondo Club, where he quickly demonstrated determination and talent despite living with dual disabilities. However, his journey took a dramatic turn in July 2019, when he lost his remaining vision halfway through his third year at the university. The sudden loss threatened not only his academic progress but also his dreams.
Rather than give up, Solomon chose resilience. Drawing on his experiences supporting blind classmates and friends in adapting to life without sight, he gradually rebuilt his confidence and focus. His perseverance paid off when he graduated as the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Special Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, finishing top in a class of 45 students—an achievement that underscored his determination to succeed against all odds.
A decade after graduation, Solomon transformed his personal journey into a mission to support others. He founded the Lionheart Ability Leaders International Foundation (LALIF), an organization dedicated to advancing advocacy for persons with deafblindness in Nigeria.
Through sustained efforts and partnerships, including support from the Disability Rights Fund, he and his team achieved a major milestone in October 2024, when deafblindness was formally recognized as the ninth disability cluster in Nigeria during a national conference.
Despite his growing role as an advocate, Solomon never abandoned his passion for martial arts. In June 2023, accompanied by his Tactile Sign Language Interpreter, he visited the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, determined to find a coach who would train him.
Although he could not locate a Taekwondo instructor, fate introduced him to Shihan Ayodeji Idowu, a Karate coach experienced in training persons with disabilities. Though it was his first time working with a deafblind athlete, the coach accepted the challenge and began training him.
The training journey was demanding. His dual disability created unique obstacles, requiring patience, adaptation, and persistence. Yet, through hard work and determination—supported by the expertise and encouragement of his coach—Solomon steadily improved. His progress eventually earned him selection to represent Lagos State at the National Para-Athletes Festival, Abuja 2026, marking a historic milestone in his sporting career.
Speaking about his participation, Solomon explained that his motivation extended beyond personal achievement.
“My major aim in representing Lagos State at the Para-Games was not just to win a medal. It was to prove that persons with deafblindness can compete successfully alongside others in sports and in life. I saw myself as representing not only Lagos State but also Nigerians with deafblindness who are still striving to find their place in society.”
His determination yielded remarkable results. Solomon delivered a strong performance throughout the competition and ultimately secured the Silver Medal in the Blind Male category after a closely contested final against a competitor from Plateau State.
The competition also brought success for the Lagos State Karate Team. Under the leadership of Sensei Geraldine Idowu, Miss Joyce Otunba won the Gold Medal in the Female Wheelchair Karate category, while Mr. Adewale Lawal demonstrated commendable effort in the Blind Male category.
One of the most memorable moments came during the medal presentation ceremony, when a senior official of the Karate Federation of Nigeria publicly expressed admiration at witnessing a deafblind athlete compete at the national level for the first time and pledged to personally recognize Solomon’s courage and achievement.
Reflecting on his journey, Solomon emphasized the importance of support systems and inclusive opportunities.
“Every person with a disability can achieve whatever they set out to do—and even excel—when they receive the necessary accommodation and support. I sincerely appreciate everyone who has supported me from the beginning, including my coaches, my interpreter, my team members, and my family. Their encouragement made this achievement possible.”
He also shared a powerful message for persons with disabilities: “Your disability is what you define it to be—not what others say it is. Your disability does not define you. Only you define yourself and the future you want to build.”
Today, Solomon’s story stands as a powerful symbol of courage, perseverance, and possibility. From a young boy watching martial arts films to a national silver medalist and advocate, his journey continues to inspire persons with disabilities across Nigeria and beyond—reminding the world that ability can rise above any limitation when determination leads the way.
