Foundation for Youth Awakening and Empowerment (FOYAE), a youth focused Non-governmental Organization, NGO, has concluded a 3-day training for Persons with Disabilities in the area of public budget literacy. The customized training is aimed at equipping participants with relevant information, knowledge and skills for budget tracking and monitoring.
This information was disclosed to INN on Thursday by Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Linda G. Alabura.
Alabura revealed that her foundation is dedicated to the youth.
In her words, “we work in harmony with youths to help them become important leaders of tomorrow”.
The main objective of the training, according to the Executive Director, is to build on capacities and knowledge of trainees to master the process of public sector budgeting in relation to basic education, as well as training stakeholders on public sector budget preparation and development.
“Our target is to train PWDs to appreciate the principles, procedures, and processes employed in budget allocation and implementation”.
“I am quite convinced that most of you (trainees) are not well informed on the procedure and processes involved in public sector budgeting. This makes you prey to various forms of budgetary exploitations by the MDAs”, Mrs. Alabura remarked.
Mrs Jamila Suleiman, a lecturer with the College of Education, Billiri delivered the key note presentation. She spoke on the topic: “Instruments of Budget Tracking” during the presentation, she exposed participants to key procedures and strategies for feasible budget tracking and monitoring.
Mrs. Suleiman notes that there are several ways by which Persons with Disabilities could monitor public budget to ensure implementation of what is documented.
The lecturer charged participants to develop the practice of following and tracking budgets to their end goals. She maintained that the monitoring and implementation of public budget isn’t restricted to the government, rather, the citizenry – including PWDs are expected to take responsibility too.
Mrs Suleiman urged trainees to be courageous enough to expose any budget-related corruption using whatever means at their disposal to ensure those involved in this kind of exploitation are brought to book and face the wrath of law.
INN learnt that the trainees, selected across clusters of PWDs including three blind, three Deaf and three persons with physical disabilities will undergo another training on public sector budget at an undisclosed location and time to be soon disclosed by FOYAE.
