Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled has called on both Federal and State Governments to create platforms and infrastructures that will put an end to the segregation, discrimination, and non-inclusion experienced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Chairman of the Foundation, Ibrahim Garba Madu made the call at an event to celebrate this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The event was organized by the foundation with support from Sightsavers Inclusion work project in Kano, Kano State.
Garba enumerated the challenges faced by PWDs in Kano to include lack of access to public offices, etc.
He thereafter called on the private and public sectors to promote access and equal participation of Persons with Disabilities in the workplace and all aspects of everyday life.
Reiterating that a lot of people living with disability are educated; he however notes that it is unfortunate that society generally think people living with disability are subpar human whose lives revolve around begging for alms”.
“The chairman also notes that full participation of this vulnerable group in societal affairs would be enhanced by creating an accessible environment and structures like sign language interpreters, ramps, braille signage, lifts, Digital accessibility tools, e-braille and so on,”.
“People living with Disabilities constitute about 20% of Nigeria’s population and I am of the opinion that we have every right to vie for any and every position, be it in politics or otherwise like every normal human being”.
“People living with disability should be encouraged, failure to do which, they might likely end up on the streets begging. These, in the long run, become liabilities to society,” he said.
According to the Garba, this year’s commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities raised passable awareness on challenges faced by this category of Persons with Disabilities.
He further revealed that the Kanawa Foundation supports people with special needs in various areas, including enrolling them in school, paying their medical bills, and other essential needs.
December 3rd marks the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which brings attention to the inequalities these persons face in society. The theme this year is: ‘Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities Towards An Inclusive, Accessible, And Sustainable Post-COVID-19 World’.

You indeed made a better a call, kanawa Educational Foundation always traies to to help people with disabilities to be fully educated. Thanks kanawa!!! Government should please put it’s hand to help them too, especially for creating job opportunities in both state and federal level.
