Dr. Samuel Ankeli, the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the President on Disabilities has shortlisted erstwhile Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki as a recipient of the ‘Pillar of Disability in Nigeria’ award in commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Saraki said he was pleasantly surprised when informed at the end of a visit by the SSA that he has been shortlisted as recipient of the ‘Pillar of Disability in Nigeria’ award at this year’s commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
He stated “Dr. Samuel Ankeli, SSA to Mr. President on Disabilities paid me a visit yesterday. I had not seen him since we closely worked together in 2018 to pass the National Disability Bill which was signed into law in 2019.”
“During his brief visit, we discussed the actual and projected impact of the bill on people Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) over the past two years.
“I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the visit when he informed me that at this year’s commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I have been shortlisted as a recipient of the ‘Pillar of Disability in Nigeria’ award.
In appreciation, the former Senator and Kwara State Governor remarked, “I would like to thank all partners, stakeholders and the screening committee, which includes the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council, for this thoughtful nomination — and pledge to keep up the fight for the rights and dignity of all PLWDs”.
