Deaf Community Organises 30th AGM, Demands Recognition Of Sign Language.

The Nigeria National Association of the Deaf NNAD in collaboration with Kano state Association of the Deaf hosted its 30th Annual General Meeting at General Murtala Muhammadu Library Kano State.

The opening ceremony held Monday, the 28th of September 2020 featuring some dignitaries that included the Senior Special Assistant to the Kano State Governor on the Disabled Matters, Malam Tasiu Shehu Yakasai, The Representative of the Emir of Kano Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero ably represented by Dan Masanin Kano, and the SSA to Imo State Governor on Disabled Matters, Mr. Samuelson Emehibe, amongst others.

The Outgoing National President of the Association, Mr Sulaiman Saka Dagbo requested for total recognition of sign language, deaf human rights and linguistic rights among others.

He however commended the Federal Government under the leadership of President Mohammadu Buhari for signing into law the Disability Rights Bill and Establishment of the National Commission for PWDs to implement the said Bill.

The Association was expected to hold it’s National Election on 29th September 2020.

The Northwest Coordinator of the Association, Mr Abubakar Abdullahi however commended the Kano State Association of the Deaf for their efforts on hosting the National Convention in Kano despite the little resources at their disposal. He further urged all delegates across the country to vote and not fight. According to him, Kano is peaceful and peace loving, we hope delegates will exercise their franchise peacefully.

INN however gathered that the Zonal Election already started Monday with North Central which produced Nehemiah Daret who emerged victorious with 29 votes against Abdulwasiu Mbawanka who scored 14 votes from their Zonal Delegates.

The National Election continued peacefully early Tuesday with 6 delegates each from 36 States of the federation casted their votes massively for Chidi Olujie, a presidential candidate of the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf who was declared winner against his opponent, Lukman Agbabiaka. The scores between the opponents stood at 150-72.

Other positions recently announced by the electoral committee are as follows;

2. Timothy Adejumo …….127 votes.

Assistant Secretary General:

National Treasurer:
1. Hajara Nasiru ………… 103 votes.

2. Taofeek Kareem…….. 117 votes.

Public Relations Officer:
1. Labaran Bala………… 123 votes.
2. Muntari Magaji ……. 98 votes.

National Financial Secretary:
1. Emeka Ude……………. 129 votes.
2. Dennis Enadeaghe…….92 votes.

National Chief Whip:
1. Umaru Isah………….130 votes.
2. David Polycarp……… 92 votes.

National Social Secretary:
Bukola Fakunle……. 136 votes.
Ibrahim Abdullahi……. 86 votes

National Women Leader:
1. Agatha Olaniyi……. 91 votes.
2. Hajiya Amina Ahmed…129 votes.

National Youth Leader:
1. Ebuka Okeke ……. 112 votes.
2. Ashiru Nagoma ……. 110 votes.
