Isaac Sewanu Educational Foundation (ISEF) has called for employment of special teachers at Methodist High schools for children with Disabilities in Badagry, Lagos State.
Pioneer of the foundation, Mr. Isaac Sewanu Jesukon, made the call in commemoration of the International Day of Education. The theme for this year is Changing Course: Transforming Education.
Methodist Junior/Senior High School is the only Government-owned Secondary Schools in Badagry which mainstreams students with disabilities alongside other students.
There are four voluntary sign language interpreters for deaf students in the schools. The schools also provide for students with other forms of disabilities, for example, persons with physical disabilities, the mentally retarded, etc.
Executive Team Lead of ISEF, Jacob Francis Adeshina disclosed that the organization has executed several programmes for schools in Badagry, however this is the first time they are including schools with special needs.
He remarked that the visit has helped the organization gather much needed information on students with disabilities and special teachers.
According to him, “special teachers in these schools are working as volunteers. It means they are not gainfully employed by the state government. They are doing it for humanitarian purpose.”
Students with disabilities with the donated education materials
Adeshina lauded the teachers for doing good jobs because according to him, these students with disabilities are able to read and write because of the hard work put together by special teachers.
He urged the state government to grant full employment to the teachers at Methodist junior/senior high school and other special schools in Badagry while ensuring they are given more responsibilities.
Adeshina said: “We have visited two special schools in Badagry, L.A primary school, Ajara and Methodist junior/senior high schools, Badagry to distribute educational materials as part of our project.
“We will do more for students with disabilities in the future by bringing other NGOs to assist the children. They deserve more attention, and can be useful to the society”.
Siyanbola Oluwatosin, a sign language interpreter at Methodist Senior High school, thanked iSEF for providing exercise books and other educational materials to the children. She solicited for more support in the future.
Another sign language interpreter, Ayantunde Elizabeth of Methodist Junior High school, commended the organization for the provisions.
She also called on the state government for support, adding that the students need help with more special teachers and vocational training in order to useful to themselves and contribute meaningfully to society.
