The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities on Friday at the Commission’s headquarters, Plateau State liaison complex, received from a team of academic experts on inclusive learning, the newly developed curriculum for use in tertiary institutions.
On ground to receive the document from the visiting team was Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr James David Lalu. Lalu expressed satisfaction at the accomplishment by the team within the short time span.
“I must commend you for a job well done, said the Executive Secretary. I’m fully satisfied and feel fulfilled. To me, this is a dream come true. Having passed through the experience before, I can assure you that I’m really satisfied and fulfilled because this is dream I had long before I was appointed ES of the commission.
“I consider this the first step in addressing issues affecting PWDs especially as it relates to discrimination against PWDs in Tertiary Institutions.
“I’m optimistic that the curriculum, when implemented will go a long way towards addressing challenges associated with vices. This will ultimately bring about a robust relationship between PWDs and the general public.
Mr Lalu went on to assure that he will present the document to the appropriate bodies for necessary adoption and implementation.
While addressing the academic team, Mr Lalu said this is just the beginning, the team will still be engaged to produce a course manual to be used by lecturers in tertiary institutions.
He added “we intend to put in more efforts to touch the lives of PWDs in a positive light and at same time we will ensure the negative narrative surrounding PWDs is changed in the coming year.
The Executive Secretary commended the team for their efforts. According to him, monetary gifts alone is insufficient to appreciate the wonderful job done. He remarked that the Commission and members of the Disability Community really appreciate the efforts.
Head of the team, Professor Ademokoyo Julius remarked that the curriculum is being presented with a great sense of duty and satisfaction.
His words: “this is such a great move and the first of its kind in years – to have a course on Disability Studies in Tertiary Institutions. I want to appreciate my team for the sacrifices made in ensuring the actualization of this special document.
“We are optimistic that the development of this curriculum will bridge the long standing gap resulting from exclusion and discrimination while simultaneously bringing about a united front where PWDs and mainstream society coexist and respect each other”, Prof. Ademokoyo said.
