Persons with Disabilities in Bauchi State have called for the establishment of Special Education departments in the State’s four tertiary institutions to bring to relative safety, endangered PWD lives pursuing academic ambitions in States with security concerns across the federation.
This request was made during the budgetary hearing for citizens’ input hosted by Hon. Aminu Hammayo, Commissioner, Ministry of Budget and Economic planning, in preparation for 2022 Budget.
The group, represented by Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities had various disability clusters and students seek special scholarships for students with disabilities to study within and outside the country.
“We requested the State Government to establish special education departments in four(4) tertiary institutions in the State for security reasons as most of our disabled students are studying Special Education in States facing security challenges. Protecting their lives therefore, is of paramount importance”, the agency said.

“To this end, we seek the establishment of Special Education departments in the following institutions : Bauchi State University, Gadau, Aminu Saleh College of Education, Bauchi, Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, Bauchi and Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi.
“As education is the best investment in the lives of Persons with Disabilities, we also seek special scholarships for our disabled students to study abroad like their abled counterparts.
“We also appeal to the State Government to renovate rehabilitation centres in the State and to establish new ones in the three geographical zones of the State.
“Interpreters should be employed in the above mentioned State tertiary institutions. This, we believe, will help deaf students in those institutions to excel in their learning.”
