The Ikorodu West Deaf Development Association has joined the World Federation of the Deaf and The Nigerian Deaf Community to commemorate its annual International Week of the Deaf.

The four-day event with the theme: “Celebrating Thriving Deaf Communities” kicked off September 23.

The Chairman, Ikorodu West Deaf Development Association Tosin Kuku said the week was set aside to celebrate the achievements of deaf communities and also clamour for recognition in the society.

“Discrimination against deaf people must stop. We are proud of our condition, it does not discourage us,” Kuku said.

He pleaded with governmental and non-governmental organisations to partner with their association in seeking recognition and inclusion of deaf people in activities, and also employ interpreters in various offices and hospitals in Ikorodu West local council.

“If we have organisations willing to sponsor, we will be willing to train people in sign language,” he said.
