Constitutional Amendment – NASS To Provide Constitutional Support for Disability Laws

The National Assembly is working towards providing constitutional backing for Disability laws at both National and State levels.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser on Special Needs and Equal Opportunity to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Barr Abdulsalami Idowu during a consultation forum with Executive members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD and cluster heads in Lagos.

The consultation forum was convened by Hon. Busuyi Omopariola, board member of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities representing South West Zone. The forum was convened in all South West States with the aim of harvesting issues peculiar to the region.

Barrister Idowu noted that having constitutional backing would ease implementation of the disability laws.

He also disclosed that the speaker, House of Representatives, is working towards strengthening the capacity of lawmakers to disability issues. Also, the house has a standing committee on disability.

“We are also working on ensuring that laws and policies being developed in the country are disability-sensitive,” the lawyer concluded.
