The Chairperson, house committee for the vulnerable and Persons with Disabilities, who’s also representative for Okigwe North constituency has assured of intentions to amend legislations covering National buildings and employment for people with Disabilities.
The amendment, she confidently affirmed, will allow Persons with Disabilities unlimited access to denied Rights and privileges that they have encountered in the past.
The chairperson, Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha made the call at an event in commemoration of the 2nd year anniversary of passage of the National Disability Act by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Hon. Onuoha noted that she will ensure the UN Convention and Treaties on Persons with Disabilities, to which Nigeria is signatory are duly implemented in the country.
“The House of Representatives will surely live to its mandate to ensure that ministries, departments, and relevant agencies align towards implementing the provisions and acts that will better the lot of Persons with Disabilities”, she stated.
The honourable lawmaker also used the occasion to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping to his campaign promises of creating and passing the Prohibition Act against Persons with Disabilities, adding that over twenty million Nigerians are in this category. She then called for urgent actions to alleviate their conditions.
In the same vein, she thanked the Federal House of Assembly Speaker, in person of Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for appointing her to head the Committee that will look into the underlying predicaments of people with disabilities in Nigeria.
She enjoined Persons with Disabilities not to fidget as her team will ratify relevant legislations and amendments where necessary to ensure that all salient areas are fully and properly infused to make life meaningful to the persons with Disabilities.
She assured that once the plenary resume, the committee will put up a Bill to amend National buildings and Employment Code for People with Disabilities. She went ahead to explain that with a decisive stride, many PWDs will have unlimited access to hitherto denied Rights and privileges that they have faced in the past.
She promised to do all within her capacity to change the narrative of PWDs to something better and pleasant, adding that the government has reckoned with their plights and is ready to act fast to redress all issues in due time.
