Registration for a novel contest, tagged as ‘Deaf Literary Icon’ competition has begun in earnest.
The organization spearheading the competition is known as LUMINOUS DEAF SCHOLASTIC INITIATIVE (LUDESI). The founder of the organization, Mrs Bernice Oyeleke said that the NGO was birthed out of the need to encourage and promote deaf education in Nigeria
She said the competition, which would hold nationally, will commence on August 8, with an online essay competition and end in September with a physical contest.
Speaking in the introductory video, Oyeleke stated that the competition is to improve the literacy prowess of Deaf students in Nigerian institutions and reward excellence.
According to her, the competition will be in two stages with Stage 1 expected to be an online competition with series of activities ranging from essay writing contest, poetry contest to speech in sign language contest.
She said Stage two will be a physical competition among the top 10 shortlisted contestants in the first stage.
The venue, time and day, she said, would be communicated.
Oyeleke said awards will be presented to winners in the categories of Best in Essay Writing, Best in Poetry Writing, Best in Speech Delivery, while the overall winner will be crowned the Deaf Literary Icon 2020 with mouthwatering prizes attached.
She said registration which is currently ongoing will end on the August 7, 2020.
