Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has presented an award to President Mohammadu Buhari and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development on behalf of all Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria. The honour was given in recognition of the recently endorsed Disability Bill and the establishment of a Disability Commission
The presentation took place at the inauguration of the Governing Board of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, SGF Hall, Federal Secretariat, on Tuesday.
Receiving the award on behalf of the President and herself, the Honorable Minister thanked the JONAPWD President for the show of gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Buhari and also for the Organization’s passion for the growth of Rights of Persons with disability in Nigeria. She promised that her Ministry will continue to support the growth of the newly created commission to further the rights and development of Persons with Disabilities.
Earlier , the National President of JONAPWD, Ms Ekaete Judith Umoh in her opening remark had thanked the President for ending 18years of struggle by signing the disability law.
She implored PWDs in Nigeria to take advantage of disability law and its privileges to further their rights and development.
Ms. Umoh also pleaded with the Disability community to work together with Government and be patient, as implementation of the law will not be an overnight process. Meanwhile, she wished the community of Persons with Disability well.
