Anambra State Association of the Deaf (ANSAD) has just concluded the year 2020 in style as it honoured a number of personalities who have contributed to the development of the association during the year.
The event was held on Sunday at Prof Kenneth Dike State Center E-Library, Awka, to mark Christmas celebration for members of the community.
There were moments of joy and praise to God for his protection and blessings. The association chairman, Mr Nwagwu Amobichukwu, in his speech thanked God for keeping the association and her entire members safe throughout the year.
“We thank God for seeing us through and for guiding us from January to where we presently are. It’s not by our power.
“We trust in the Lord and hope for a better year ahead with no one missing. This is our last monthly general meeting, the chairman announced.”
Amobichukwu implored ANSAD members to be of good conduct wherever they find themselves. He also encouraged them to keep observing COVID-19 preventive protocols.
He appreciated the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano for his unrelenting support to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) while extolling the great efforts of the Special Adviser to the Governor on disability matters, Barr. Chukwuka Ezewuzie for his visionary leadership of the community of PwDs in Anambra State.
“We pray God guides and strengthens you to continue doing well and more for the community of PwDs next year and always”, the chairman said.
Highlights of the event were drama and comedy by Deaf artistes, dancing competition and recognition of those who have contributed to development of the association in one way or the other during the year.
Among the awardees was the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on environment, Princess Bibiana Nwankwo Ada of APGA. She was recognized in appreciation of her unwavering commitment towards the welfare of Deaf Anambraians.
The Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Mr Ugochukwu Okeke, was also awarded for his visionary guidance and exceptional leadership and support to the Deaf community in Anambra State.
An award was also presented to special assistant to the governor on sign language communication, Collins Joseph, for his meritorious service and support to the Deaf community, especially in terms of bridging the communication gap with sign language.
Three former chairmen of ANSAD, Elder Michael Obiekwe, Elder Polycap Udeage and Arch. George Melkiam also received awards for their years of selfless service.
The event also witnessed presentation of gifts to executives and members whose efforts, contributions, and support were also appreciated.
