The Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Center, Jos, has condemned in strong terms, the recent discrimination against an air passenger, Mrs. Oguntoyose Gbemi (pseudonym) by Dana Airline.
Mrs. Oguntoyose, whose embarrassing experience was reported last Sunday was scheduled to fly Dana Air 9J 353 from Lagos to Abuja but was refused board because she was on wheelchair.
Executive Director of Beautiful Gate, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, while condemning the airline’s staff’s excuse that ” there was no provision for wheelchair users” cited discriminatory tendencies and a violation of the Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2019.”
Chief Gufwan expressed concern that despite the passage into law of the Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2019 in Nigeria, people living with disabilities continue to face various forms of discrimination. This, he remarked, “is sad and condemnable”.
The Executive Director said, “The Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Center condemns the action of Dana Air and other organizations who engage in similar acts and call for the full implementation of the National Disability Act with the aim of addressing unfavorable policies which further discriminate against persons with disabilities in the country.”
Gufwan demanded that Dana Airline apologize to Mrs. Oguntoyose Gbemi for the embarrassment and trauma she was subjected to.
“Also, they should apologize to People Living with Disabilities via media outlets and their official social media handles. Meanwhile, the airline operator must change its discriminatory policy towards People Living with Disabilities. If Dana Air fails to meet the aforementioned demands, we shall mobilize a total boycott of Dana Air by People Living with Disabilities, their family members and friends, an indignant Gufwan threatened.”
A clarion call was made on the need for the government to sensitize the public on the rights of People Living with Disabilities while prosecuting those who violate the National Disability Act. Such will serve as deterrent and reduce the injustices People Living with Disabilities face as they go about their legitimate business daily.”
