The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Hon James Lalu has promised to promote sign language in Nigeria, making it widely accepted language.
He said this while addressing the press at a post match conference of a football game hosted by the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) in commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD) at Panorama Park Garden, off Tamara Guest House, Beside NHIS FCT, Wuse Zone 3 Abuja.
Emphasizing on the importance of the IDPwDs and how it means so much to the community of PwDs, he said “we will continue to fight for our rights, we cannot afford to leave anyone behind.”
“We shouldn’t cease to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for implementing the Disability Act by constituting the national commission in line with the Act.
“The commission will continue to work with the Federal Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to break barriers and open doors of opportunities for PwDs.
“We will collect data of PwDs, gather all local sign language we have in Nigeria. We will merge these in order to establish an official Nigerian Sign Language that will be widely recognized, and included in the curriculum”, Lalu concluded.
