NDW Tasks Persons With Disabilities on Education, Skills and Employment

Network of Disabled Women (NDW) has tasked persons with Disabilities to press for their demands on rights to acquire tertiary Education, skills and employment with the backing of the Nigerians with Disabilities ACT.

The group made the call through the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lois Auta-Udonkanta in an event organised on Saturday titled: “dialogue series with young persons with Disabilities on career path” supported by sightsavers in Abuja.

Speaking during the briefing, Lois stated that “with the provisions made available in the Nigerians with Disabilities ACT recently passed into law by President Buhari administration, we shall be mounting a strong campaign in our institutions of higher learning to press for our rights to acquire tertiary education, employability skills and subsequent gainful employment”

She wants full representation of persons with Disabilities in these areas.

Speaking on choosing a career path at the event, Social worker at Sexual & Gender Based Violence Response Team, FCT, Ms. Chisom Onwuegbu noted that “choosing the right career opportunities is vital for youths while adding that finding a mentor will guide youths through their career path.”

She advised young persons with Disabilities not to limit themselves from choosing career options.

She said “As much as there are limitations,there are also ways to surpass those limitations.”

Social worker at Social Development Secretarial SDS, Bosede Igberhoro, admonished Persons With Disabilitiess to concentrate on passion as essential importance in choosing the right career path without limitations.

Solomon Tarfa, a lecturer at University of Abuja, speaking on various series on choosing career, he counseled youths with Disabilities to reflect on their interests and focus on setting career path that will help in forming decision making for professional growth.

In his closing remarks, project officer Micheal Brian, admonished Persons with Disabilities to get a copy of the Disability law. Adding that it’s the right of PWDs to receive quality education.

He said “If you don’t know your rights you can’t fight for it.”
