The group, Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) have tasked President Buhari’s administration on the need to mainstream issues and needs of persons with Disabilities, especially Women and Girls With Disabilities (WGWDs) into its policies, processes and systems of government so that the over 25m Nigerians with disabilities are not left behind.
The Co-Founder/National Coordinator, Patience Ogolo-Dickson stated this in an interview with Inclusive News Network, INN.
Every year, December 3 is the International day of Persons with Disabilities set aside by the United Nations.
But for her a life time of better Life, barrier free environment and facilities, accessible and affordable health care and services, access to education, transportation, micro finance etc.
She noted that “Until Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGWDs) have equal access in all sectors like everyone else without any barrier, then we are not free from discrimination.”
She pointed out that “prioritizing issues and needs of women and girls with disabilities is paramount to the development and advancement of the targeted community. Adding that one must not forget the importance of changing mindsets and negative perceptions about WGWDs which reflects in the drafting of polices and programs.
“This is why many Disability Rights Advocates, OPDs and relevant development partners are advocating for more Inclusive policies, programs and activities.” She added.
Dickson asserted that the disability community is mostly at risk during crisis and emergencies and as such are tagged vulnerable groups.
“I saw people from the disability community among the protesters. This was good because the youths were actually protesting for the good of everyone.
“However, what happened was unfortunate as hijack of the process by hoodlums worsened matters. Government has however accepted and promised to look into demands made by the youths. We hope this consensus provides a pathway towards a peaceful country”.
She advised WGWDs to develop themselves to the best of their abilities and so contribute their quota to development of the community.
“Be yourselves, be positive and remain focused” she concluded.
