The maiden edition of the West Africa Zone A and B Para Games began on Friday in Abeokuta, drawing more than 700 athletes to the Ogun State capital for the regional multi-sport event.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Victor Achakpo, confirmed the impressive turnout, noting that Nigeria is represented by 190 athletes. He said all logistics—including accommodation, venues, transportation, medical support, security, and feeding—had been fully arranged to ensure a smooth championship. Achakpo added that all 16 West African nations registered for the Games, while Cameroon and DR Congo were invited as guest participants. Ten countries were present at the opening ceremony.
President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, Sunday Odebode, praised Ogun State for hosting the first edition despite logistical hurdles. He also acknowledged the support of the National Sports Commission, led by Director-General Shehu Dikko, as well as Bukola Olopade and the African Paralympic Committee, for bringing the event to fruition. Odebode noted that the Games offer an important platform for athletes preparing for major international competitions, citing the quality displayed during an exhibition amputee football match between Nigeria and Benin Republic.
Secretary-General of the Africa Paralympic Committee, Ignatius Elletey, described the event as a milestone for para sports in the region. He urged stakeholders to continue promoting inclusion and ensuring persons with disabilities have full access to sporting opportunities.
The Games will run in Abeokuta from Friday to Wednesday, with athletes competing for regional honours across multiple para sports disciplines.
