Seven steps to set or break a Guinness World Record

by Inclusive News Network

After Chef Hilda Baci’s attempt at breaking the longest cooking marathon record, a number of Nigerians, including a young Deaf Nigerian who is also attempting to set fastest time to fingerspell American Sign Language alphabet by an individual, have shown interest in breaking Guinness World Records.

Here are seven steps to follow when attempting to break or set a guinness record:

1. Explore the world records database: The first step to breaking a record is exploring the Guinness World Records page to familiarise yourself with the records criteria etc.

2. Choose a record to attempt: The second step is choosing to break a record that has already been set or attempting to set a new record.

3. Applying for a record: To apply for a record you’d be required to open an account on the Guinness World Records website, then fill an application form.

Knowing how to apply for your record and work with Guinness ensures that your attempt gets their stamp of approval and makes it into their records. Response to applications take up to 12 weeks or more.

4. Understand the requirements and evidence needed for the attempt.

After applying, you would have access to a “guide to your evidence” document, this document will explain in detail the requirements to getting a world record attempt verified

5. Practise breaking your record: Set aside time to practise breaking or set the record you are attempting.

6. Carry out your attempt: Decide on a date, time and location for the record attempt. Also make sure a photographer and videographer are there to document your attempt. You may also arrange for witnesses and other experts if required.

7. Submit your evidence and other documents: Make sure to submit sufficient evidence as over 50% of submissions are rejected due to insufficient evidence. Record reviews usually take up to 12 weeks.
