Lack of adequate space in most of Nigerian building structures has been identified as the major hindrance to free movement and accessibility for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria by a Disability Rights promoter and advocate, Mr. Raheem Yusuf Olatunji.
Mr. Olatunji made this assertion in a statement he posted on his social media handle (Facebook) to make an appeal to general public, especially those involved in the building construction, to adhere to the provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 which prohibits all forms of discrimination against PWDs.
According to Mr. Olatunji, “construction of buildings in Nigeria come with a number of flaws which does not put into consideration Persons with Disabilities”
“One of such flaws, Mr. Olatunji said, is a lack of space. Many buildings are constructed without having adequate space and what this does is it prevents a person with disability from moving freely within a building. Due to immobility, devices such as wheelchairs and crutches are utilised” the statement noted.
He also said “the large size of these devices mean enough space within a building is needed if these persons are to move around freely without hindrance.
“Inadequate of space can be one hell of an experience for persons with disabilities and conscious effort via strict enforcement of legislation needs to be taken to make sure space is always considered when constructing buildings, most especially public facilities”
