The House Committee Chairman on persons with disabilities, the Honorable Member Representing Isiala Mbano, Onuimo, Okigwe Federal Constituency, Hon. Princess Miram Onuoha in collaboration with Sightsavers organized a two day Disability Inclusion Retreat with Nigerian legislators.
In her opening remarks, she thanked the speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajibiamila for creating an opportunity to have a standing committee on people living with disabilities, which was enacted on December 7th, 2019.
The House Committee Chairman said that the purposes of the retreat was to abreast members of the legislature on the concept of disability, and how the committee can fully achieve through legislation the full integration of persons with disabilities into the society.
She shared her thought on how the legislature can achieve the stated objectives such as strategy for domestication and implementation, advocacy /awareness, inclusion of children in the disability Act.
The Honorable member also shared her thought on preventive disability approach which includes eye care, immunization, and partnering with road safety to come up with measures to avoid road accidents to minimize incidents of physical impairment as a result of injuries
The Executive Secretary, National Commission For Persons with Disabilities, in his goodwill message expressed overwhelming satisfaction on the event, saying that the retreat was first of its kind.
